English language proficiency assessment shows targets nearly met. Federal law requires Washington state to set standards for the development of English language proficiency skills and academic progress for children learning English. Every year schools across the state test students who are learning English with the Washington English Language Proficiency Assessment, which measures English language proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The first target districts are required to meet looks for an annual increase in the percentage of students making process in learning English. The state's target is 67.8 percent, the Grandview School District shows an increase of 62.9 percent of students making progress during the 2013-2014 school year. Another target is the percent of students attaining English proficiency - the state's target is 7.7 percent and last year 6.5 percent of Grandview's students successfully transitioned from the English language development program.
