Homelessness: McKinney-Vento Act Definition
The McKinney-Vento Act defines homelessness for children and youth as lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes individuals in situations such as:
- Sharing housing due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reasons
- Staying in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds due to the lack of alternative accommodations
- Residing in emergency or transitional shelters
- Being abandoned in hospitals
- Living in places not designed for regular sleeping accommodations, such as parks or vehicles
- Residing in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or transportation hubs like bus or train stations
- Migratory children and youth living in any of these conditions
