Hearing and Vision Screening
Washington State Law (WAC 246-760) requires schools to conduct hearing and vision screening of children in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 each year. If your child is not scheduled to be screened this year, you may request a screening by contacting your child's teacher or your school nurse.
Parents who DO NOT want their child screened for either hearing or vision will need to send a letter to their child's school each year indicating that their child is to be excluded from screening. Please contact your child's school nurse if you have any questions.
- Vision screening is done using a Welch-Allyn Vision Screener. We ask that students who use corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) wear the lenses during the screening to ensure accurate results. Parents will be notified by mail if their child does not pass the screening.
- Hearing screening is done using equipment providing tonal stimuli at 1000, 2000 and 4000 herts (HZ) at a hearing level of 20 dedibels (dB). Parents will be notified by mail if their child does not pass the screening.
Evaluation by an eyecare or hearing specialist is recommended for students who do not pass their vision or hearing screenings. If you have any questions regarding the result of your child's screening, please contact the nurse at your child's school.
