Dress Code

Student Dress Expectations
Grandview School District supports student expression through clothing while maintaining a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment.

Note: Students will be given a chance to correct dress code concerns before disciplinary action. Enforcement will be respectful and equitable.

Administrative Discretion
School administrators retain the right to make case-by-case decisions regarding dress code enforcement, particularly during special events or for individual student needs.

Students MAY wear:

  • Comfortable clothing of their choice that allows them to focus and fully participate in school
  • Headwear, including hats, beanies, hoods, scarves, and durags, as long as the face remains visible and the item does not create a safety concern
  • Hoodies, students are permitted to wear hoodies to school. However, for safety and engagement reasons, hoods must remain off while inside school buildings and during class
  • Clothing and accessories that express gender identity and gender expression, including dresses, skirts, pants, and other attire regardless of gender assigned at birth
  • Cultural and religious attire, such as hijabs, turbans, yarmulkes, or traditional garments
  • Layers, including jackets, sweatshirts, and cardigans, provided they comply with other dress expectations
  • Athletic wear (e.g., joggers, leggings, shorts) that provides appropriate coverage
  • Clothing that includes positive messages, school spirit wear, or artistic expression, as long as it does not promote hate, violence, or illegal activity
     

Students MAY NOT wear:

Clothing with inappropriate content, including:

  • Sexual imagery, nudity, or profanity
  • References to pornography, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or other illegal substances
  • Language or symbols that promote violence, hate speech, racism, sexism, or homophobia
  • Gang-affiliated attire, colors, symbols, or tagging
  • Garments that expose undergarments, such as:
  • Sagging pants or shorts that fall below the waistline
  • Sheer or see-through clothing without proper layering
  • Low-cut tops or clothing with excessive side/back exposure
  • Sexually explicit or overly revealing items, including:
  • Tops that expose the midriff, chest, or undergarments
  • Tube tops, crop tops, or spaghetti straps without coverage
  • Shorts, skirts, or dresses that are excessively short and don’t allow full participation in school activities
  • Face coverings that obstruct identity, unless worn for:

    • Health-related purposes (e.g., masks during illness)

    • Religious or cultural reasons (e.g., niqabs, veils)

    • School-sanctioned activities (e.g., theater, spirit days)

Accessories or items that pose a safety risk, such as:

  • Chains, spikes, or hardware that could be used as weapons

  • Laser pointers, costume masks, or other distracting props
